Etymology[edit]
From bò (“to crawl”) + sát (“close to”), referring to the fact that most extant reptiles crawl with their belly close to the ground. Compare Latin rēptilis (“crawly; creepy”) and Chinese 爬蟲/爬虫 (páchóng, “crawly/creepy beast”).
